Marina Ruggieri

Professor, Universoty Roma Tor Vergata

Marina Ruggieri is Full Professor of Telecommunications Engineering at the University of
Roma “Tor Vergata” and therein member of the Board of Directors. She is P.I. of the 40/50
GHz communications experiment of the TDP5 payload on-board the ESA Alphasat satellite,
launched in 2013. She is co-founder and Steering Board Chair of a cross-disciplinary center
for innovative communications infrastructures and applications at the University of Roma
“Tor Vergata”. She is arbitrator of the Italian Industry Federation for Aerospace, Defense
and Security. She has been Vice Chair of the Italian Space Agency Technical-Scientific
Council and member of the Council of Experts for Research Policy of the Italian Ministry.
Her research areas include: integration of terrestrial, satellite and aerial communications
systems for civil, military and dual applications; Information and Communications
Technology (ICT) infrastructures, applications and services; space communications systems,
in particular related to the use of EHF (Q/V and W bands); wireless networks; software
defined networking (SDN) application to space systems; Arctic communications; vertical
applications of ICT (in particular: health, disaster ahead management; human-robot
cooperation; food); body as a network. She is author or co-author of 350 papers, 1 patent
and 12 books.

She is currently IEEE AESS Officer and member of the Board of Governors (2019-2021).
She has been appointed AESS Vice President, Technical Operations for 2021. She has been
IEEE Vice President, Technical Activities (2017) and IEEE Division IX Director (2014-
2015); AESS President ((2010-2011); Editor for Space Systems in the Transactions on
Aerospace and Electronic Systems (2001-2015); Associate/Sector Editor and Assistant
Editor of the Systems Magazine (2005-2009). She has been member of many IEEE
Committees, including Public Visibility, Fellow, Governance, Women in Engineering,
Awards Board, MGA Strategic Direction and Environmental Assessment, IEEE-HKN
Globalization Committee.
She was awarded: 1990 Piero Fanti International Prize; 2009 Pisa Woman Award; 2013
Excellent Women in Roma Award. She received Excellent and Best Paper Awards and the
2011 AESS Service Award. She has been inducted as a Professional into the Honor Society
of IEEE Eta Kappa Nu (HKN). She is an IEEE Fellow (for contributions to millimeter-wave
satellite communications).
